Work Environment

These are 4 month term contracts, based in our Calgary office begining in May 2018.

About this opportunity

Cenovus is looking for highly motivated and ambitious students to join our engineering function. We have a number of engineering opportunities across our operations in Oil Sands (Foster and Christina Lake) and Deep Basin. The position may be office or field based.


Our student positions provide opportunities to learn and apply engineering principles to help evaluate the candidates’ potential as possible future, full-time employees. Job performance will be reviewed periodically throughout and appraised at the end of the term, culminating with a formal presentation to a range of stakeholders and evaluators.




  • Develop an understanding of field operations, which is fundamental to engineering design and decision making
  • Analyze and track production data
  • Identify possible optimization opportunities, and assist in repairs and maintenance of equipment
  • Monitor and record the production from oil and gas wells and monitor the operations of related equipment and facilities, either by visual inspection or remotely by computer


  • Legally entitled to work in Canada for the duration of your work term; able to produce documentation (e.g. work visa)
  • Available to begin work May 2018
  • Currently enrolled in a Chemical, Petroleum or Mechanical Engineering Technology Program
  • Currently enrolled full-time in an Engineering Technology program at an accredited post-secondary institution and returning to full-time studies after the work term
  • A minimum cumulative and major GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Attached copies of your transcripts
  • Expected graduation date: Winter 2018 or later
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Critical thinker and ability to work independently with limited supervision in a fast-paced, high-performing, team environment
  • Flexible to changing work demands and ability to prioritize
  • Innovative, with a strong desire to learn and the ability to encourage new ways of looking at problems, processes or solutions
  • Demonstrates collaboration by actively seeking out diverse people and organizations to collectively achieve business goals
  • Excellent computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Understanding of key safety principles and demonstrated safety leadership


Other skills

  • Previous engineering or field experience is considered an asset
