    Work Environment

    Applicants are welcome to apply for a 4, 8, 12 or 16 month term, starting May 2019. The position may be office or field based.

    About this opportunity

    Cenovus is looking for highly motivated and ambitious students who enjoy being challenged and who excel at absorbing data, analyzing problems and coming up with innovative ideas. We have a number of engineering opportunities across our operations in Oil Sands (Foster and Christina Lake) and Deep Basin.


    The position may be office or field based.


    Our Student Engineering positions provide opportunities to build a solid understanding of the Oil & Gas Industry and the opportunity for you to apply and build upon your engineering skills.


    Our operations are divided into three principal disciplines. Your assignment to an area will be determined by business need, your past experience and your preference discussed during your interview.


    Sub-Surface Engineering


    Engineers here focus on longer term, risked based reservoir management planning, reservoir optimization and production engineering.


    Surface Engineering


    Surface engineering focuses on production operations, facilities design, project management, maintenance and reliability, process engineering and integrity management.


    Well Delivery


    Our well delivery engineers are responsible for lease construction, drilling operations, completions & well servicing, and well engineering.


    Typical projects within each of these disciplines may include:

    • Analyzing and tracking data
    • Identifying possible optimization opportunities, and assisting in repairs and maintenance of wells and equipment
    • Monitoring and recording the production from oil and gas wells and monitoring the operations of related equipment and facilities, either by visual inspection or remotely by computer

    Your job performance will be reviewed periodically throughout and appraised at the end of the term, culminating with a formal presentation to a range of stakeholders and evaluators.


    • Legally entitled to work in Canada for the duration of your work term; able to produce documentation (e.g. work visa)
    • Available to begin work May 2019
    • Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree or higher in Chemical, Petroleum or Mechanical Engineering
    • Currently enrolled full-time in 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of an engineering program at an accredited post-secondary institution and returning to full-time studies after the work term
    • A minimum cumulative and major GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (please attach copies of your transcripts)
    • Expected graduation date: Winter 2019 or later
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills
    • Critical thinker and ability to work independently with limited supervision in a fast-paced, high-performing, team environment
    • Flexible to changing work demands and ability to prioritize
    • Innovative, with a strong desire to learn and the ability to encourage new ways of looking at problems, processes or solutions
    • Demonstrates collaboration by actively seeking out diverse people and organizations to collectively achieve business goals
    • Excellent computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
    • Understanding of key safety principles and demonstrated safety leadership


    Other skills

    • Previous engineering or field experience is considered an asset
